Steyr StG-58 on DS Arms Receiver

This rifle started out as a greasy, scratched up parts kit purchased at a gun show for $175.  Unfortunately, due to the strange and crazy laws of our country, it was neccessary to spend much more than that to create the fine specimen you see in the picture above.  The original receiver, which you can see here, was cut in half with a torch so as to render the gun inoperable so it could be imported.  First, I had to use a hacksaw to remove the receiver "stub."  Next, I purchased a brand new, U.S. made receiver for the princely sum of $396, plus tax.  The fun didn't stop there, though.  In order to legally assemble the rifle, it was neccessary to replace seven of the original parts with identical parts that were made in the U.S.  On my particular rifle, I replaced the receiver, muzzle brake, gas piston, hammer, trigger, sear, and the pistol grip with new parts from DS Arms, thus making the rifle meet the requirements of U.S.C. 922(r).  After I gathered all these parts, I sent the rifle off to Mark at Arizona Response Systems to install the barrel on the new receiver and to completely refinish the whole gun.  A few short weeks later, I got the gun back, and I was very impressed with the quality of the work ARS did.  All told, the rifle cost me just a hair over $1100.  The next day, I took the gun to the shooting range, and I must say, this baby shoots like a dream.  Shooting offhand at 100 yards, I was easily able to put 20 shots into a 3-4" group.  Not too bad for a surplus parts kit.
