These pictures are of the 2004 emergence of the 17-year cicadas in Cincinnati, Ohio. These cicadas were born back in 1987 and lived underground in my yard for 17 years, feeding on the juices from the tree roots. They came out in significant numbers starting on May 16, 2004 and lasted until early July. They sang, mated, flew, and generally had a good time until they died of exhaustion and fell to the ground. In August, the next generation hatched in the tree limbs above and fell to the ground, waiting to emerge in 2021. For more information on these fascinating insects, see the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology cicada page.
